The Deputy Minister raised the most important issues regarding the access of Polish agri-food products to the Malaysian market (including blackcurrant and beef products), as well as veterinary and phytosanitary cooperation issues. He emphasised the interest of the MARD in further development of bilateral trade in the agricultural sector, and pointed to the recovery of Polish exports to Malaysia. Increase in agri-food exports recorded last year amounted to around 61%. Secretary of State Zbigniew Babalski also referred to the possibility of developing bilateral scientific cooperation.

Minister Yogeesvaran, pointing to the similarities in the structure of economies between Poland and Malaysia, including the importance of the agri-food sector, declared the openness of the Malaysian market to Polish export goods.

The meeting was held at the request of the Malaysian side as part of a mission aimed at presenting the Malaysian position on the production and use of palm oil, as well as possible restrictions on the use of palm oil for biofuel production in the EU in selected European countries (draft Directive of the EP and of the Council on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources).

Today’s guest of Deputy Minister Babalski presented detailed information on the importance of palm oil production for the Malaysian economy.

The head of the Polish delegation, taking note of the Malaysian side’s arguments in this regard, pointed to the leading role of the Ministry of Energy as regards Polish energy policy and negotiations conducted at the EU level on issues related to fuels.
