On 16 March 2017, Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel met with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria Abdesselam Chelghoum. The Algerian delegation paid an official visit to Poland on 16+17 March 2017 at the invitation of the Polish Minister of Agriculture.

The meeting focused primarily on Polish-Algerian cooperation in agriculture, including the development of trade in agri-food products. The Ministers stressed the need for close cooperation of veterinary and phytosanitary services. Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel informed about the promotional activities of Poland on the Algerian market, including the planned Polish stand at the DJAZAGRO fair in April this year. He emphasized that the Polish research institutes were interested in developing the cooperation with Algerian partners.
The Algerian delegation declared its interest in renegotiation of the current bilateral agreements. Krzysztof Jurgiel confirmed that Poland was consulting such draft agreement provided by Algerian partners.
The Ministers discussed the project of Algerian agriculture modernisation where the support of Poland is expected. Modernisation and restructuring of agriculture in Algeria is a priority for state development. Poland is perceived as a success story in agriculture and as a friend who supported Algerians in their fight for independence and then provided technical support to the emerging Algerian state. In 2016, Poland exported agri-food products worth EUR 146.6 million to the Algerian market, thus making Algeria one of the largest export markets for Polish food in Africa.
Minister Chelghoum invited the Polish Minister of Agriculture to pay a visit to Algeria.
The Algerian minister was accompanied by a group of businessmen representing the sector of seed production, fruit farming, dairy sector, potato farming and agricultural machinery sector. The Algerian delegation met with Polish entrepreneurs at the session organised by the Agricultural Market Agency. The agenda of the visit also includes meetings at the Ministry of Economic Development, the Senate of the Republic of Poland, a visit to the National Veterinary Research Institute and a dairy cooperative, as well as the visit to AGROTECH fair in Katowice.
