The Deputy Minister took part in a seminar summarising the National Food Conference, i.e. a platform set up by President Emmanuel Macron. This is the consultative platform for representatives of all entities operating at the individual stages of the food supply chain, which are involved in terms of quality and quantity, and from the point of view of food safety. It worked from 20 July to 21 December 2017 in France.
The objective of the seminar was to present new solutions in the context of the current challenges in the distribution chain identified in three thematic areas:
- providing farmers with decent life by guaranteeing prices relevant to their contribution to the production,
- reducing inequalities in access to food,
- promoting consumer choices conducive to healthy eating, food from proven sources and produced in a sustainable way; supporting changes in production models to better respond to consumers’ needs.
As part of three discussion panels, there was an exchange of experience with regard to actions for improving farmers’ income, both in the context of the job creation in rural areas, development of local markets, risk management and the recovery of equilibrium in the food chain. As regards access to food, the role of self-governments in building local food policies and counteracting food waste was discussed. Also the issue of the promotion of appropriate eating habits, the role of research and education and the protection of arable land was raised.
On 24 February 2018, the Undersecretary of State Ryszard Zarudzki took part in the ceremonial opening of this year’s edition of the SIA Fair and in an inaugural show of farm animals. As part of visiting the exhibition, he visited the following stands: CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development of Tropical and Mediterranean Regions), INRA (National Institute for Agricultural Research), COOP de FRANCE (organisation bringing together about 2,500 companies – agricultural and agri-food cooperatives, which represent 1/3 of food brands, group 3/4 of farmers and employ about 165,000 employees) and AGENCE BIO (French Agency for the development and promotion of organic farming). The thematic axis of the tour was “research, innovation and development”.
In addition, the Deputy Minister met with the scientific director for agriculture in the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) Christian Huyghe. The subject of their talks was the transfer of knowledge and innovation to practice, including the financing system and the role of farm advisory services in implementing knowledge.
The SIA International Agricultural Show is one of the most important exhibition events in the agricultural industry, especially in the breeding sector, organised annually for more than 50 years in Paris and gathering more than 1,000 exhibitors and more than 650 thousand visitors.
